Even though the number of reported Covid-19 cases are fewer among children, and symptoms not as severe, it would be ludicrous to assume that kids are immune to the deadly disease. Here are the CDC guidelines to stop the spread of Covid-19 in children.
I believe all parents are motivated by the love of their children, and strive hard for their well-being. However, parents are facing a challenge to put on masks on their kids. I have hardly seen any kids wear masks at crowded playgrounds where I live, for example. And many of my friends complain that their kids resist wearing masks. This got me thinking about what I did as a parent to encourage my toddler to wear a mask. So here I am, sharing my experience hoping that it’ll be of some help!
Well it’s one of those isn’t it where you need to remind yourself what’s a priority. A kid’s safety – any day! Right?
So you – the parent – need resolve! Besides ‘You’ know how to do it already – you trained them to eat, walk, speak, brush, go to potty, and so on. You got this one too! Sadly, this is a necessity of the new world we live in.
These are a few things you can do:
- Start leading by example, wear masks whenever outside your home, and make sure you mention it to them. Kids learn by imitation.
- Talk to them about the situation and the need of the hour – kids are intelligent beings, and with enough repetition they’ll learn soon.
- Buy them a printed mask of their choice, or make one at home involving them to encourage its use.
- Show them videos where wearing masks is shown as a positive activity. To this effect, a popular cartoon character, Daniel Tiger is going to air episodes emphasising the importance of wearing masks.
- Shower positive reinforcements when they exhibit desirable behaviour. Here are some positive reinforcement ideas for kids.
While it’s not recommended to wear a mask during moderate to high physical activity, it’s imperative to make sure that social distancing guidelines are followed in such circumstances. Having said that, masks are a necessity in public places – both indoors and outdoors! Especially, when there are more people around and lesser possibility of following the recommended guidelines for social distancing.
(N.B.: Masks are not recommended for kids under 2 years of age)
Remember, the sooner we all get more conscious the sooner we can “flatten the curve” and beat the Covid-monster!
